GM to hire 200 at Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant
Workers already chosen for jobs, no other hiring planned

General Motors Co. is hiring 200 people at its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant ahead of starting production of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu later this summer, a person familiar with the plant’s plans said Thursday.

The workers have already been selected for the jobs and were referred by other people who work for the Detroit automaker, the person said.

No other hiring at the plant now is planned, the person said.

Detroit-Hamtramck employs about 1,200 hourly workers, plus 150 salaried workers.

It builds the extended-range plug-in Chevrolet Volt and Opel Ampera.

It also will build the all-new 2014 Chevy Impala.

The Malibu is also built at GM’s Kansas City, Kan., assembly plant.

Detroit-Hamtramck plant spokesman Chris Lee said he would not comment on scheduling, other than to say the plant would match production with demand.

The Detroit-Hamtramck factory has seen its fortunes rise and fall in recent months.

The plant was scheduled to shut down for five weeks beginning March 19 because of slow sales of the Volt.

But sales picked up, causing GM to trim a week off of the temporary shutdown.

April was GM’s second-best retail sales month since the Volt was launched in late 2010.

In California, GM had an eight-day supply.

GM also plans to suspend production of the Volt for an extra week this summer in addition to the traditional two-week shutdown as it tries to control the electric car’s inventory.

It could cancel that plan if sales stay strong.
