GM says March best month ever for high mpg model sales
By MELISSA BURDEN / The Detroit News
General Motors Co. said Monday that its 12 vehicles getting 30 mpg or better on the highway will have combined U.S. sales of 100,000 or more for March — its highest ever monthly total for the automaker.

“GM’s strategic investments in four-cylinder and turbocharged engines, advanced transmissions and vehicle electrification have been very well timed,” Mark Reuss, president of GM North America, said in a statement. “Three years ago, about 16 percent of the vehicles GM sold achieved at least 30 mpg on the highway. Today, that number is about 40 percent and we have more new fuel-economy leaders on the way, including the Chevrolet Spark, Cadillac ATS and Buick Encore.”

Manufacturers, including GM, will officially report U.S. sales numbers for March on Tuesday.

GM said its 12 vehicles that earn at least 30 mpg on the highway are the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic, 2012 Chevy Cruze, 2012 Chevy Volt, 2012 Chevy Malibu, 2013 Chevy Malibu Eco with eAssist, 2012 Chevy Camaro, 2012 Chevy Impala, 2012 Chevy Equinox, 2012 Buick Verano, 2012 Buick Regal with eAssist, 2012 Buick LaCrosse with eAssist and the 2012 GMC Terrain.

Last year, 40 percent of new GM vehicles sold had four-cylinder engines, according to GM. The automaker currently offers four models with turbocharged engines and will double that number for the 2013 model year.

In 2007, 49 percent of GM vehicles sold were trucks, 39 percent were cars and 13 percent were crossovers. To date in 2012, 34 percent of GM vehicles sold are trucks, 41 percent are cars and 24 percent are crossovers. The numbers don’t add up to 100 percent due to rounding, GM said.
