GM confirms diesel 2013 Cruze

General Motors Co. confirmed today it will add a diesel version of its top-selling Chevrolet Cruze to its 2013 model year lineup.

The diesel Cruze already is on sale in Europe and elsewhere outside the United States, the company said, but will be brought to America to strengthen Chevy’s Cruze lineup with more fuel-efficient options. Additional details will be released at a later date, the company said.

The diesel version is expected to be built at GM’s plant in Lordstown, Ohio, alongside the gas engine models. GM has said it only plans to build Cruzes at the 4,500-worker plant, which is already operating with three shifts.

The Cruze Eco is currently the highest gas-mileage version of GM’s newest compact, which went on sale last fall. It gets an Environmental Protection Agency-estimated 42 miles per gallon highway, 28 mpg city and 33 mpg combined.

A diesel Cruze is expected to beat those numbers, delivering 50 mpg, according to a July 11 Associated Press report, citing unnamed sources.

At that rating, the Cruze diesel would rival the fuel efficiency of some popular hybrid electric cars on the market today, including the Toyota Prius.

The Cruze, whose base model starts at $16,525, sold 25,000 vehicles in June, beating the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord to become America’s top-selling car.

Diesel engine cars generally cost more than those with gas engines because they are more expensive to produce. U.S.-based automakers have been reluctant to bring diesel engines to the United States for fear that people wouldn’t pay extra for them.
