GM expected to announce $300M Flint investment

/ The Detroit News

General Motors Co. is expected to announce Monday that it will invest about $300 million to build a new full-size truck at its Flint Assembly Plant, according to sources familiar with the plans.

The investment will create or retain a few hundred jobs, the sources said.

GM spokeswoman Kim Carpenter declined to comment Friday other than to say: “We have some exciting news, and we look forward to sharing it on Monday,” when company and union executives have scheduled a morning news conference in Flint.

GM Labor Relations Vice President Cathy Clegg and United Auto Workers Vice President Joe Ashton are expected to attend the announcement.

Detroit-based GM builds full-size and heavy-duty trucks at the Flint factory, including GM’s top seller, the Silverado, which was last redesigned for the 2007 model year.

GM also builds the Silverado and other pickups in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Last year, GM sold 370,135 Silverados and 129,794 Sierras, according to AutoData Corp.

The plant employs 2,100 workers on two shifts.

GM will add a third shift and 750 jobs at the plant this quarter to meet stronger demand for heavy-duty work trucks.

The investment comes as the UAW and Detroit’s Big Three gear up for contract talks this summer.

The union’s four-year agreements with the automakers expire Sept. 14.

GM announced in May that it would invest $2 billion to create or save 4,000 jobs at 17 facilities in eight states.
