Aisin says its supplies to GM have not been disrupted

The Detroit News

Aisin Seiki Co. Ltd., a large auto supplier partly owned by Toyota Motor Corp., said deliveries to General Motors Co. and other North American customers have not been disrupted by the turmoil in quake-ravaged Japan.

“There has been no impact on the delivery or supply of Aisin transmissions to any of our North American customers, including GM’s plant in Shreveport, La. , which we continue to supply,” said Chuck Sanders, assistant vice president at Aisin World Corp. of America.

Aisin made the statement amid speculation about the reason for GM’s announcement Thursday that it would suspend pickup production in Shreveport for a week because of a shortage of parts related to events in Japan.

GM has not identified the part in short supply or the supplier providing it.

Aisin halted output at its Japanese plants after the quake but said it has sufficient inventory in North America to supply its customers here.

“It also has inventory on its way to cover future production at our customers’ manufacturing facilities for several weeks,” Sanders said.

“In general, there is normally several weeks of inventory kept in the U.S. for overseas suppliers; also, it normally takes three to four weeks for shipping of new orders, meaning additional product is already en route to the U.S.”
