DETROIT — General Motors Co. is expected to announce today that it is adding a third shift and 650 jobs at its Flint, Mich., assembly plant, which builds the heavy- and light-duty versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra pickups.

The Detroit News, citing anonymous sources, said most of the jobs would be filled by laid off UAW members.

GM scheduled a 10:30 a.m. press conference today in Flint, where GM North America President Mark Reuss, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and UAW officials will speak, according to a GM press advisory issued Sunday.

It was not immediately clear how much GM planned to invest in the plant, which now employs 2,000 people, the newspaper reported.

GM sold 370,135 Silverados last year, a 17 percent gain over 2009 in an overall market that rose 11 percent. GM also sold 129,794 Sierras last year, up 16 percent from 2009.

GMC Sierra sales rose 16 percent in 2010.
