More jobs are headed to Spring Hill, and that news couldn’t come at a better time: Hundreds of businesses have been forced to shut down since the General Motors plant idled.

Five months ago, Utopia in Spring Hill was just that — the ideal place to be. At the time, there were rumors the GM plant was reopening. But owner Seth Leninger wasn’t too concerned then.

"I don’t know what to think exactly, but it could mean good things for Spring Hill," he said.

Today, things are much different.

"It’s not as noisy. There’s no one making coffee," said Leninger.

He’s trying to sell the building instead of a few lattes after the GM plant’s idling finally caught up with his bottom line.

"It’s kind of been a permanent drop-off and went lower and just didn’t really improve since then," said Leninger.

Now Utopia and several other businesses in Spring Hill are for sale; 250 have had to shut their doors in the past business year.

"It’s just an unfortunate situation to watch happen," said Mayor Mike Dinwiddie.

The mayor said help is coming. Next week, city leaders are sharing a business announcement they’re keeping under wraps. They’re staying tight-lipped but said it will mean more jobs for the area.

"There are businesses here looking at Spring Hill as far as wanting to relocate here," said Dinwiddie.

"They may be a little late, behind the curve, but hey, better late than never, I suppose," Leninger said.

City leaders said the announcement next week doesn’t have to do with the GM plant.
