DETROIT (Reuters) — General Motors Co. has formed a venture capital subsidiary to help the U.S. carmaker develop technologies in the automotive and transportation sector.

GM said today it is exploring equity investments in a number of auto-related technologies and business models, and the new venture would enhance its ability to identify innovative technologies.

General Motors Ventures LLC, funded with an initial investment of $100 million, will be led by Jon Lauckner, who has served as GM vice president of global product planning.

He will report to Stephen Girsky, GM vice chairman of corporate strategy and a member of the board.
