GM to add shift at Oshawa plant to meet Equinox demand

The Detroit News

General Motors is adding a third shift at its Oshawa assembly plant in Ontario to boost production of the Chevrolet Equinox.

The plan involves expanding the body shop at GM’s CAMI Automotive plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, which produces the Equinox and GMC Terrain. The plant will produce extra Equinox bodies, which will be shipped to Oshawa for paint and final assembly alongside Chevrolet Impalas.

The move is aimed at fixing a shortage of one of GM’s most popular models and resolving a problem that has deprived the automaker of additional sales.

"This plan for CAMI and Oshawa allows us to meet customer demand for hot products while avoiding a potential production overcapacity situation by creatively using our assets and facilities," said Mark Reuss, president of GM North America.

"This innovative approach enables us to ramp up in a timely and cost-effective way and highlights the importance of these plants and communities in our North American plans."

The plan also will result in boosting GMC Terrain volumes.

The third shift will be added in October and require recalling about 600 workers. At the CAMI plant, an unspecified number of laid-off workers will be recalled and about 70 new jobs will be created by August.

GM sales are up almost 13 percent this year while sales of the Equinox are up 98 percent compared to last year.
