YMCA passes on UAW Hall

SPRING HILL — Plans for the Spring Hill YMCA to lease a portion of the United Auto Workers Local 1853 Hall have been scrapped.

For months officials with the YMCA of Middle Tennessee had discussed leasing a portion of the UAW Hall, and Mayor Michael Dinwiddie said during a recent chamber of commerce luncheon that a lease had been signed.

But because of the economy, the YMCA’s senior staff recently recommended not leasing the facility, according to Mike Brennan of the Spring Hill YMCA.

Brennan said the YMCA is moving forward with plans to build soccer fields and a parking lot on 20 acres off Derryberry lane near Wright Elementary School in Spring Hill.

YMCA soccer teams currently practice on temporary fields on Jim Warren Road in Spring Hill.

Brennan said plans for the entire project also include a pavilion and walking trails, but Phase 1, which includes the soccer fields, will take priority.

“We’re hoping to have them (fields) ready for the spring season next year,” Brennan said. He said the project will cost roughly $1 million that will be raised through a capital campaign set to begin later this year.
