Toyota Motor Corp. said it may recall as many as 1.8 million vehicles in Europe, as the trouble with the automaker’s gas pedals spread beyond North America.

Brussels-based Toyota Motor Europe said it would recall eight models, including the Corolla and RAV4, to fix a pedal that may stick or spring back slowly.

"We understand that the current situation is creating concerns, and we deeply regret it," Tadashi Arashima, president of Toyota Motor Europe, said in a statement. "We would also like to reassure customers: The potential accelerator pedal issue only occurs in very rare circumstances."

Toyota recalled 2.3 million vehicles last week in the United States and Canada. It has stopped sales and production of the eight models involved in the recall.

In Europe, the models affected are: 2005-2009 Aygo, 2008-2009 iQ, 2005-2009 Yaris, 2006–2010 Auris, 2006– 2009 Corolla, 2009-2010 Verso, 2008–2009 Avensis and 2005-2009 RAV4.

"The precise number of involved units is still under investigation, but may reach up to 1.8 million vehicles," Toyota said.

As with the U.S. recall, no Lexus models are affected.

Toyota said it "has identified a remedy for this issue, and is pursuing a final evaluation and confirmation procedure."

Toyota is not halting production in Europe, where it adjusted production and now uses different pedal parts.

Toyota said a few incidents involving the pedal had been reported in Europe, and the company was not aware of any accidents caused by the problem.
