GM set to end production Feb. 5 at local plant
Production at the General Motors Corp. Mansfield/ Ontario Metal Center is expected to end Feb. 5, spokesman Tom Mock said Wednesday.
The Detroit-based company announced in May 2009 it would shutter the local plant by June 2010. About 600 workers have since retired or taken buyouts, and about 100 have transferred to other GM plants.
Jan. 29 had been the target date for ending production.
The factory still has about 400 people working, including temporary workers, Mock said. After production ends, a few will be retained.
"We’re going to be running some service parts that week to assist the organization," Mock said. "We’ll continue to make parts for our customers through Feb. 5. After that, some team members and maintenance personnel will be on hand to take care of the various business requirements we may have. That process is scheduled to continue through the first half of the year.
"That, of course, is subject to change."
The factory opened in 1955.
