City, County Offer More Incentives to GM Truck Plant

FORT WAYNE, Indiana (Indiana’s NewsCenter)–Fort Wayne city and Allen County officials have announced a $2 million incentive package to the General Motors Truck Assembly Plant in unincorporated Allen County.

The package was unveiled Thursday morning at a news conference at the City-County Building. The money will help pay for $26.4 million worth of new equipment General Motors will install at the assembly plant to allow the facility to produce heavy duty trucks. Right now the plant only produces light duty trucks.

In September General Motors announced it would add 700 jobs at the assembly plant in 2010 to create a third shift necessary for the expansion. Local officials say the incentive money helps to ensure the high-paying jobs stay in the area.

"GM’s Fort Wayne assembly plant has become a national leader in efficiency and productivity," said Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry. "The cooperation of the City and County on this incentive package for the heavy-duty truck line is critical for the retention of these manufacturing jobs." About one-half of the truck plant’s 2500 workers live in Fort Wayne.

The incentive package announced today is in addition to Allen County’s tax abatement for the plant.
