Plant closing latest sign of GM mediocrity

I find it unbelievable that GM is closing, er, idling, the Saturn plant in Spring Hill.

After the Saturn was abandoned, the Chevy Traverse, after a $750 million cosmetic procedure, has moved its production to Detroit. That leaves acres and acres of a production facilty, 2,000 ex-workers and countless adjoining businesses without income and paychecks.

How could this happen to GM? Saturn was touted 25 years ago as a new car company, something totally revolutionary in GM’s history. Then, the typical engineering, mechanical and electrical problems surfaced, and the car was just another brand enjoying so-so styling.

It baffles the mind to witness America’s car manufacturing capabilities always coming in second to the Japanese. The much-heralded Chevy Volt, debuting next year, is another round of "revolution," but stickered at $40,000, I wonder. I know Detroit, Flint and other cities need the work, but couldn’t they have built the car here in Tennessee?

To further sicken American hearts, observers are saying that GM paying back its government bailout loans is a huge Ponzi scheme. Is there a light at the end of this tunnel?
