SPRING HILL, Tenn. – The last Chevy Traverse came off the assembly line Wednesday in Spring Hill, and nearly 1,400 employees lost their jobs.

General Motors workers knew it was coming, but they said it was still difficult to accept.

Just past 9 a.m., the final Traverse rolled off the assembly line. Employees snapped lots of photographs, and there were lots of hugs and tears.

"It’s a somber mood. You have friendships you’ve developed. It’s hard," said GM worker Michael Smith.

After the shift, dozens of employees gathered at a nearby tavern. They talked about losing their jobs on the day before Thanksgiving.

"It makes it a little extra hard because of the holidays. People try to think of this as a happy time, and for a lot of us it really isn’t with the possibility we may have to move across the country to keep our jobs," said GM worker Rocky Barajas.

GM is offering transfers to more than half of the employees who lost their jobs, but they’ll have to move to plants in Michigan and Kansas.

Not everyone lost their job. More than 800 people will stay behind to build parts for other cars.

Many GM employees have worked in Spring Hill since the early 90s when the first Saturn came off the assembly line.

The Saturn went away and GM brought in the Chevy Traverse, the crossover vehicle.
