Ex-salaried workers to lobby for pensions

Ex-salaried workers to lobby for pensions

Business First of Buffalo – by Thomas Hartley

Representatives of salaried retirees from Delphi and General Motors will appeal their pensions not be cut when they appear at a Senate committee hearing in Washington Thursday.

Among those attending will be Den Black, interim chair of the Delphi Salaried Retiree Association (DSRA), and a former chief engineer at Delphi Thermal Systems in Lockport during the 1990s.

James Frost of Amherst, interim vice chair of the DSRA and another retiree from Delphi and General Motors, has assisted with preparations for the day-long hearing by the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

Salaried retirees are fighting to protect their pensions from being cut when taken over by the federal Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp.

They say they are being treated unfairly.

The approximately 15,000 Delphi salaried retirees lost their health and life insurance benefits and estimate they will receive only 70 percent of their pensions when they are moved to the PBGC.

On the other hand, the DSRA says that GM, which was Delphi Corp.’s parent until 1999, will pay full health, life insurance and pension benefits for Delphi’s former hourly workers, who are represented by unions.

The PBGC stepped in during Delphi’s nearly four years of operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and is in the process of assuming responsibility for the pensions.

Delphi emerged from Chapter 11 early this month.
