Michael Moore Dukes It Out With General Motors Yet Again

DETROIT — In what sounds like a publicity ploy, controversial filmmaker Michael Moore is claiming that General Motors banned him from the premiere of his own new documentary, Capitalism — A Love Story, on Sunday.

Moore said he rented out four theaters in the General Motors-owned Renaissance Center in Detroit for the premiere of the movie. He told WDIV-TV in Detroit that when GM realized it was his film, they wouldn’t allow him on the premises. "Somehow, they are able to ban me from my own premiere," Moore said.

But General Motors had a different take on the controversy.

"The screenings did go on as originally scheduled, but Moore was not given permission to do a press conference in the building," GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson told Inside Line on Monday in response to an e-mailed query.

He added: "The film, after all, does attack both big business and government."

This latest development harks back to events 20 years ago, when Moore was escorted out of General Motors headquarters in Detroit while filming Roger & Me. Moore had been trying to get an interview with GM’s then-CEO, Roger Smith, when he was bounced from the building. In a new twist, there is no bad guy, per se, in this latest chapter, since GM CEO Fritz Henderson is not mentioned.

GM is a part of the new Moore film, which blames the economic crisis on President Reagan-era deregulation and greedy business executives.

Capitalism — A Love Story

arrives in theaters on October 2.
