GM’s money-back offer shows guts, not anxiety

PAUL W. SMITH

Outta my mind on a Saturday moanin’:

It is gutsy, not desperate, General Motors’ offer of a 60-day money-back guarantee on its vehicles.

No one knows what will happen when this program begins Monday.

I still like my idea of the automakers putting "loaded to the max" cars in their fleet sales to rental car companies — even if the rental companies will only pay the price they have been buying for the stripped-down rental cars.

You can’t buy that kind of access to get people who stopped going into American car company showrooms long ago. When they rent one of our stripped-down cars, they often may have their bad feelings about our cars reinforced.

What a beautiful time of year. It is another fine reason to live in the great state of Michigan.

Later today, University of Michigan fans (like me) will know a lot more about our football team after facing Notre Dame in Ann Arbor.

Before that, Michigan State University fans (like me) will know a lot more about our football team after facing Central Michigan University in East Lansing.

For some, the balance of how we view the fall and winter season will be based on how today might go for "our" teams.

How did it go for your high school team last night?

Sunday is National Grandparents Day. Don’t forget to call or, better yet, visit with your grandparents, those of you lucky enough to still have them around. Your grandparents, and your kids’ grandparents, would consider your mere presence a present enough.

Don’t miss your newspaper. Start each morning with the e-Edition by going to edetroitnews.com. If you haven’t seen it yet, you really haven’t seen it.

This Tuesday and Wednesday, I’ll be broadcasting from Germany at the 63rd annual Frankfurt Motor Show. You bet I’ll be e-ing you.
