GM to transfer Grand Rapids workers to Indiana plant

Associated Press

Marion, Ind. — General Motors Co. is transferring about 85 workers from its recently shuttered Grand Rapids plant to a plant in north-central Indiana.

GM spokeswoman Alicia Kocher says the workers will transfer to GM’s Marion metal stamping plant over the next three weeks. The plant 50 miles south of Fort Wayne has about 1,000 workers.

The transfers are part of GM’s response to its closure of several of its North American plants, including last month’s shutdown of the Grand Rapids metal stamping plant.

Last week, Marion’s city council approved a $40 million economic development bond to help GM commit up to $364 million in company assets to the Marion plant.

GM told the council that move could create up to 100 jobs.
