Over a thousand employees of the General Motors Tonawanda Powertrain plant will have the chance to vote next Thursday from 7 AM to 7 PM on a new tentative agreement with concessions with the company.

UAW Local 774 Union President Sal Morana says this vote is a crucial step and results must be turned in by Friday. General Motors needs to know if the concessions are approved by the union when it presents its final restructuring plan to the White House.

GM faces a June 1st deadline or it could be forced into bankruptcy. The union says the agreement could help preserve its current conditions for employees. If it was not in place a Federal Bankruptcy Court Judge could nullify the contract agreement with GM and impose the court’s own concessions.

UAW Shop Chairman Bob Coleman says the agreement does call for the union to take over more of the trust for health care costs for an estimated 600,000 retirees which is a major cost for the company.

Morano says he and other union leaders will be briefed on the agreement in Detroit on Tuesday and then explain it to workers on Wednesday before the Thursday ratification vote. Morano says there may be other concessions which some members will not like but feels his union’s members realize they may be needed to save the plant and their jobs.
