UAW Takes Stand Against Company

Workers at a local auto supplier take a stand against their employer. Ryder Logistics and Transportation Solutions is in danger of losing its contract with General Motors. In an effort to match lower bids from several companies, Ryder is asking its drivers to make some wage concessions. Drivers say for once they’re putting their foot down. Day after day workers hop in their Ryder trucks and transport parts to and from Lansing’s GM plants.

Eric Norris, Ryder driver: "They’re making us work like dogs, it’s just slave labor."

Which is why Ryder drivers say they were shocked to hear the company wanted them to take a pay cut. They met at their union hall to vote on wage concessions, because workers say they can’t give any more.

Rick Adams, Ryder driver: "I’m not making enough money that I can get back and forth to work, so if I take any less, I won’t have any money for gas to get back and forth."

By not taking concessions, the group knows Ryder may lose its contract with GM, which in turn means their jobs could be on the line, but that’s a risk they say they’re willing to take.

Dolores Carpenter, Ryder driver: "It’s going to hurt me more to have to drive to work for less money than to go on unemployment and get out there and try and find something better."

Because workers are running on empty. GM is still accepting transportation contract bids. There’s no word yet on when it will choose a company.
