Which GM factories are likely to close

By Greg Gardner

General Motors still hasn’t identified the 16 plants — the number established in its Feb. 17 filing with the federal government — that it will close or idle by the end of 2012. But these seem vulnerable:

Production of the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky fell 60% in 2008 to 15,452.

Home of Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon and Hummer H3/H3T. It likely will go to the eventual buyer of the Hummer brand.

Several plants build the same or similar vehicles, where only one will be needed:

Even though GM already is closing a truck plant in Oshawa, Ontario, it may need to shed one more.

Both plants make crossover vehicles using the same chassis: The GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave and Saturn Outlook in Lansing; the Chevrolet Traverse in Spring Hill. Production could be consolidated.

Both produce the Chevrolet Malibu, while Orion also makes the Pontiac G6, which will be phased out with the end of the Pontiac brand. Fairfax also makes the Saturn Aura, which may end with the Saturn brand. One Malibu plant may be enough.

  • Lansing Delta Township/Spring Hill, Tenn.
