Performance Transportation Services is North America’s second-largest vehicle hauler.

The Teamsters union is set to strike against the nation’s No. 2 car hauler on Monday, June 9.

Union leaders approved the strike against Performance Transportation Services Inc. today. Members had voted to strike by a 3-1 ratio this week.

The action comes after a bankruptcy court judge gave the suburban Detroit company permission to cut the pay of its union drivers by 15 percent, according to The Detroit News.

According to Performance Transportation Services’ Web site, the company delivers almost 4 million vehicles each year. The Detroit News reports that Performance Transportation Services delivers 10,400 vehicles each day for Toyota Motor Corp., General Motors and Ford Motor Co.

A prolonged work stoppage at Performance Transportation Services could hurt automakers and dealers. The Detroit News quoted spokespeople for Performance Transportation Services’ main customers saying they have contingency plans.

Performance Transportation Services has operated under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection twice since 2006. The car-hauling business has been hurt by declining car shipments in North America and rising fuel prices.
