5th GM plant idled by American Axle strike

 

 

 

A fifth General Motors Corp. plant is slated to shut down tonight as a result of the strike at American Axle & Manufacturing Inc.

 

GM’s assembly plant in Moraine, Ohio, is slated to run out of parts late in tonight’s second shift, a spokesman said in a recorded message this morning. GM is telling employees to report to work at their regular schedules Tuesday for training.

The American Axle strike, now 1 week old, already has forced GM to shut down plants in Pontiac, Flint, Fort Wayne, Ind., and Oshawa, Ontario. All of those plants make GM’s Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. GM’s Moraine plant makes

The UAW brought 3,600 of its members at American Axle out on strike, after contract negotiations broke down Feb. 25.

SUVs, including the Chevrolet Trailblazer and GMC Envoy.vehicles is not expected to affect dealers right away. J.D. Power & Associates reports that Envoys sat on lots for an average of 59 days before they were sold, between December and mid-February. Trailblazers took an average of 75 days.
