SAN FRANCISCO — In a move that could radically alter the used-car business, General Motors said today that 3,900 auto dealers who sell GM’s Certified Used Cars will list their entire inventories on eBay Motors.
The listings will be free for dealers.
Mark Mathews, GM’s director of used-vehicle activities, said the certified used-vehicle inventory of dealers who sell GM Certified-brand vehicles will be listed on the third-party classified site starting in the second quarter.
The GM Certified brand includes certified used Buick, Chevrolet, GMC, and Pontiac vehicles.
Cadillac, Hummer, Saab and Saturn have separate certified used-vehicle programs, but their certified-used inventories will be listed on the site, too, Mathews said.
The agreement enables dealers who sell GM brands to show their certified-used inventory to eBay Motors’ 11 million unique users. The program will become even more attractive to dealers and consumers if other manufacturers post their certified-used inventory on the site, too, Mathews said.
“EBay is the No. 1 automotive Web site, 34 percent of all automotive minutes spent on the Web are spent on eBay,” he said.
GM is still working with eBay Motors to finish the site, Mathews said, adding that vehicles will be listed as online classifieds rather than for sale in an eBay online auction.
The certified-used vehicle inventory of GM dealers is listed on more than 300 Web sites, including AutoTrader.com and Cars.com.
About 3,900 dealerships sell GM Certified vehicles. Their inventory totals about 64,000 units. Last year, GM sold 516,560 certified-used vehicles. That was more than any other automaker but 0.7 percent less than it sold in 2006.
