Saturn flexes its green muscle………

We first saw the Flextreme concept wearing an Opel badge at last year’s Frankfurt Auto Show, but for its Detroit debut it carries the Saturn badge.
Besides that, details remain the same. As a product of a collaborative effort between Saturn and Opel, the concept previews future styling ideas and green message for both brands.
The plug-in electric concept is based on General Motor’s E-Flex system first seen in the Chevrolet Volt. A 34-mile range is available from one charge and a 1.3-liter diesel engine recharges the batteries thereafter. Battery charging can also be done with a household outlet in three hours.
In addition to the clear polycarbonate exterior styling elements over the grille and rims, the B pillars are gone on the FlexDoors for easy access to the rear seats and trunk and a FlexLoad tailgate. The concept is outfitted with two Segway scooters in the trunk with charge station.
The interior features strong, lightweight honeycomb structures for the lower dash, floors and center tunnel over the lithium-ion batteries.
To further save weight, seats are constructed from lightweight materials and feature single track floor anchors instead of the traditional dual tracks to increase foot space for rear occupants.
A display is housed under the windshield that projects the images from two side-mounted exterior cameras to view the car’s surroundings. An additional center console touch-screen display controls climate, navigation and communications functions.
