Chevy Malibu wins top award

The 2008 Chevy Malibu won the North American Car of the Year award today.

 

DETROIT — For the second straight year, General Motors has won North American Car of the Year honors. The 2008Chevrolet Malibu defeated the Honda Accord and the Cadillac CTS.

Truck of the year honors went to the Mazda CX-9. This was the first time any Mazda vehicle has won since the awards’ inception in 1994. Two GM products finished second and third behind the CX-9.

All told, four of the six finalists were GM vehicles.

Winners were named this morning at the start of press days for the North American International Auto Show.

The Malibu topped a field of 15 nominees for the car award, receiving 190 of a possible 450 points. The CTS was second with 165 votes and the Accord was third with 95 votes.

The CX-9 finished first of 13 vehicles for the truck awardwith 201 points. The Chevy Tahoe hybrid was next with 140 votes and the Buick Enclave finished third with 109 votes.Winners were selected by a jury of 45 automotive journalists from the United States and Canada. Jurors award 10 points to the cars and 10 to the trucks. They can award all their points to one vehicle or divide them among vehicles in each category. Vehicles receiving the most points win.

The jury includes Automotive News Executive Editor Edward Lapham. Also on the jury are AutoWeek Interactive Editor Dale Jewett and Road Test Editor Natalie Neff. Automotive News and AutoWeek are published by Crain Communications Inc.
